Market analyst Telegeography said Skype’s voice traffic across the globe boosted by 41 percent, which makes the VoIP software company the world’s largest carrier of intercontinental telephone calls today. According to the firm, 35 percent of its users worldwide use Skype for business purposes. The business industry constitutes a large part of the global market, thus amplifying Skype’s growth over other VoiP companies.

Ian Robin, sales and marketing manager of Skype's business division, said, "We have got a very compelling offer, especially on international calls. But it is also easier to text with a PC keyboard than a mobile phone keypad. Business travellers use Skype to stay in touch with family while overseas, and this often expands to calls and ‘chats’ to the office.”

Skype allows users to make telephone calls over the internet. Calls to other Skype users are offered for free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can cost €0.17.  Its features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. Users also have the option to pre-pay for calls and voicemail services.
