Ebay Set to Put Skype on Auction
Ebay is slated to divulge plans of selling Skype to an investment group. According to the New York Times, the private firms interested with the VoIP service will include venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.Another company, Index Ventures, is also reported to be part of the acquisition agreement. Skype's value was not officially disclosed, but eBay previously announced it is looking into earning $2 billion dollars from the service.
Skype was acquired by the online auction company back in 2005 for more than $3.1 billion. The value included payments to Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom of Sweden and Janus Friis of Denmark.
Although Skype users ballooned from 53 to 405 million, Ebay faced various downsides from acquiring the service. Skype was later valued at $900 million as eBay failed to successfully integrate it with its online shopping business.
