Many see it as the insurance companies newest snooping device, but the fact remains that by 2016 most of us will have the newly developed tracking devices installed in our cars which will let our insurance companies know everything about our driving habits and charge us for insurance accordingly. The devices will measure how strictly we adhere to speed limits, how harshly we break etc. and then companies can amend our insurance costs every year to match how safe they think we are behind the wheel.Though this tracking is not the IT products primary function is it clear that this is the direction the new initiative is taking. Current models are going to be used by break down companies as a method of locating vehicles on long roads- such as the M25 with few discernible landmarks. Police will also be able to utilise the design, as they can accurately track cars which have been stolen. The current IT support requirements for devices such as these have yet to be decided.
