Unsecured Wi-Fi is No File-Sharing Defence

Littlefish News

According to a law firm, it seems that IT services users that benefit from IT connectivity and they have an unsecured wireless network, don't have any excuse for when it comes to illegal downloads. However, IT services providers that allow users to go on the Internet and download copyrighted material are not to be held responsible for users actions. For this reason, 1,500 consumers got warning letters for illegally downloading an album and sharing it from Gallant Macmillan LLP Solicitors. Consumers that have received these letters have to pay 375 pounds and costs to settle the claim. This is what Ministry of Sound wants over downloads of its Annual 2010 album. A senior partner with the law firm said that "If you make a decision to unsecure your network it is no defence. You can’t put yourself in a better position legally by throwing caution to the wind. Most routers come with security on as a default - if someone has made a decision to unsecure their network they can’t take that action without realising that there may be consequences."
