Project to make website owners responsible for user security announced

Littlefish News

The Trustworthy Internet Movement (TIM) is a non- profit IT company run by security experts and entrepreneurs unsatisfied by the slow pace of improvements in online safety. TIM has announced that in a recent study that over 50% of tested internet sites were using security protocols which have already been proven to be compromised.TIM plans to investigate two specific aspects of website security and then publish regularly updated lists which will highlight both companies which have both good and poor internal IT security. The SSL (secure sockets layer) certificate security of a website was the first area to be focussed on. TIM later plans to look at the more complex aspect of certificate authorities (CA).There are current SSL certificates in use, which have been compromised and as such are no longer secure. These were found in over half the sites tested. This is something which TIM will act against as these certificates are supposed to protect the users sensitive data such as credit card details. The project hopes to make owners aware that they are responsible for the security of the users of their sites and to encourage users to avoid sites where security is being ignored as an issue.
