The Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program is now under control of hackers who have held its patient’s data in exchange for $10 million. The PMP keeps a massive collection of medical patient’s drug prescriptions designed to thwart people from expending their access to medicines.
Hackers have breached the site and subsequently posted their demands. The website is currently down and could not be reached for comments.
The hackers demanded that payment should be given within seven days or they will hand the data over to the highest bidder. They threatened to sell personal information such as social security number and driver’s license details.
The FBI was even mocked for its no negotiation policy on ransom demands for classified information. The agency is now investigating who could be behind the attack.
