Couple Alleged of Illicit File Sharing

Couple Alleged of Illicit File SharingA couple from Inverness were accused by Atari, a game firm, of illegal sharing of Race 07 on their computer. Gill and Ken Murdoch were threatened with high court fines for their alleged file sharing as a way to protect copyright.

The couple claims they never played a computer game in their lives, but Atari’s solicitors think otherwise. The Murdoch’s are said to have been monitored by London law firm Davenport Lyons, by which their IP address was caught illegitimately sharing game files. Both were given  the option to pay £500 compensation and £25 costs,  or spend more should the case be formally filed in court.

Which? Computing magazine conducted  an investigation regarding Davenport Lyons’ move, and according to the magazine, the law firm opted not to take further action against the couple since then. Which? reckons hundred of innocent internet users are mistakenly identified as illegal file sharers due to unsecured network. Users with home network should encrypt their connection to avoid unsolicited use of their IP address,
