The Thai government announced its plan to create a firewall to block websites containing criticisms against the country’s widely popular royal family.
Various complaints have been sent to the Information Ministry regarding such offensive sites, and the government is doing its best to protect the interest of the royal family. The Thai government has been alleged of opposing the monarchy, which it firmly denies.
The Information Ministry is set to shell out between 100 million and 500 million baht ($2.9 million and $14.6 million) to build a digital firewall across Thailand to impede internet users from gaining access to contentious sites.
Thailand’s Royal Family has been eluding from any political interference, but the recent political conflict in the country is altering that perception. The effort to block websites purported to be odious to the monarchy came amidst the political crisis now plaguing the country.
