Employees at Dell Requested to Take Unpaid Vacation

With the ongoing economic recession, Dell has decided to ask its employees to take a maximum of five days unpaid vacation leaves. The move is part of Dell's retrenchment program, aiming to cut 8,900 jobs.

Dell plans to reduce operating expenses in its fourth quarter which explains the recent job cuts. Jess Blackburn, Dell's spokesman, said, "The intent is to better position Dell for long-term competitiveness."

Blackburnd also added, "We are asking employees on a voluntary basis to consider taking off (up to) five days ... as unpaid time off as a flexible way to reduce costs for the company."

Dell is the second largest computer maker in the world, trailing behind Hewlett-Packard. The technology company develops, manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. Dell is eyeing to generate $3 billion of annual savings in three years through venturing in cloud computing. Michael Dell said the company is building a cloud of its own around IT services, and he sees a significant decline in IT service costs through cloud computing.
