Internet site use of cookies- control deadline approaching

Littlefish News

There is just over 2 weeks before the new strict guidelines come into place controlling both the number of cookies users are exposed to and the functionality of the cookies are brought into place. A recent survey by an IT security company Truste, which looked at 50 of the UKs most commonly visited sites found that users could encounter more than 140 cookies and trackers while looking at a site. The survey also showed that over 2/3 of these tracking cookies belonged to third parties, not the site owner itself. On the 26th May the new ruling comes into place, this will force sites to provide clear and comprehensive ICO- information about cookies. The rule means websites must now tell people that the cookies are present, what they are doing and gain explicit permission to store a cookie on a persons device.Authorities say that this is a step towards protecting peoples personal information. Some people are unconcerned with the changes as users have always been able to opt out of cookies and tracking if they elected to.
