A software that blocks drivers using their mobile phones while driving has been uncovered by Canadian firm Aegis Mobility. The security device, dubbed as DriveAssist, can distinguish when a cell phone is moving at car speeds and spontaneously route all calls to voicemail and hold all text messages until it verifies that the phone is no longer in mobility. 911 calls, however, are always allowed. Optionally, users as passengers can choose to override DriveAssist and accept incoming calls and place outbound calls without interruption.
In addition, the DriveAssist system has the capability to tell the callers about the location of the person they are attempting to reach through a satellite navigation technology. It doesn’t have full control over a driver’s mobile phone as specific numbers to be blocked can be picked.
Aegis Mobility is a Canadian-based company offering solutions that enable people to manage their mobile communications based on activity, location, time and caller identity, putting people in control of their lives while increasing their productivity and ensuring their personal privacy. DriveAssist is the very first product based on this solution. The software is slated for release in 2009 with major U.S. wireless providers.
