Trend Micro Security Update Damages Computers

Two signature Trend Micro security updates caused Windows XP and Vista PCs to crash when various critical system files were confused as malware.  The update inaccurately detected eight different Windows files as Trojans, and subquently quarantined the misidentified files.

Trend Micro issued the updates to users running Trend Micro's AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2008, Internet Security 2008 and Internet Security Pro 2008.  The company has admitted the glitch and explained that when the flawed updates were discovered, a replacement signature update was immediately released.

Though for some users, the replacement came in a bit too late as their PCs have already been crippled by the flaw. A detailed support document for users who have downloaded the software updates was circulated following the reported hitch.
