Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have released an add-on for Firefox 3 which vows to dissuade wi-fi hackers. Internet users have become weary of the neverending feat of hackers to manipulate their computer system. Firefox 3.1 finally offers an add-on which could revive the users’ faith in the internet.
The new add-on will help check whether users are receiving the same authentication information (digital certificates) from online banking, retail and other financial websites. If one notary gets different information than the browser or other notaries, it is possible that an attacker has compromised the connection – either by ’spoofing’ Domain Name System (DNS) entries or possibly because of accidentally logging on to a malicous wi-fi hotspot pretending to a genuine provider. In either case, users will be alerted of the potential attack. For some, this is one breakthrough that could, at long last, provide guaranteed internet safety to users. But for others, this could just be another security hole that serves as a vector for hackers to steal sensitive data from millions of users.
