Verizon, American broadband and telecommunications company, has announced that it is being used in a scam that offers $750,000 to consumers. The nature of the scam is quite plausible and many consumers may be enticed with the amount scammers are offering. The trick is, consumers will receive a letter telling them that they have won a special sweeptakes. "Verizon Financial’ will appear as the firm who has authorized the payment of their `winnings`. Consumers will then be asked to pay a processing fee of $3,200, and the scammers will even send a fake check worth $4,500 in each winning envelope. Supposed `winners` will also be asked to contact a claims agents who will collect sensitive financial information.
Verizon has denied any involvement in the phony sweepstakes. The company recommends that consumers should file a report with the United States Postal Inspection if they receive letters associated to the scam.
