Internet service provider AT&T said Wi-Fi usage has noticeably swelled throughout the first quarter of this year. Attributed factors include the growing number of hot spots and computer users owning WI-Fi enabled devices.
According to AT&T, there were approximately 10.5 million Wi-Fi connections last quarter, three times more than that of the same period in 2008. Around 4 million of these connections came from smartphones such as iPhone and Blackberry.
AT&T started supporting 20,000 hotspots in the US and 80,000 globally sometime last year. The firm also recorded 471,000 connections using its LaptopConnect cards. AT&T users take advantage of these connections for free, with defined qualifying plans.
