According to Matthew Gast, principal engineer at Trapeze Networks, the forthcoming 802.11v standard will increase power savings in Wireless LANs.

The standard has been initiated in early 2004 and is presently set for sanction on March 2010. I t will feature a Wireless Network Management Sleep Mode and longer power-off times for 802.11 radios.  Another addition will be wake on WLAN capabilities to enable managers to wake wireless computers and other appliances. The new protocol will also sport new location features that offer RFID and emergency services greater precision.

The 802.11v standard will be comprised of several other power saving features. Gast noted that station management aspects will be included in the modifications which will allow managers a more in depth view of network performance.
