IRS Prone to Security Breach
The Treasury Inspector for the Tax Administration, a Treasury Department watchdog, revealed that the US Internal Revenue Service is operating in web servers that contain vulnerabilities or have not received proper authorization. The IRS runs in 2,093 web servers and 540 of those servers are reported to be susceptible to malicious attacks. Furthermore, 1,811 internal servers are identified to be unauthorized to connect to the network and 1,150 are used in non-business related transactions.Few of the examples mentioned in the report were buffer overflow weaknesses and servers that used blank passwords. These vulnerabilities are attributed to employees who fail to perform their duties as required and holds the agency in jeopardy as a result.
