Woman Fined $1.9 Million for Illegal File Sharing
A woman alleged of illicitly sharing music on the web was directed to pay $1.92 million in damage fees. The Recording Industry Association of America won its case against Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who breached record label copyright through downloading 24 songs from Kazaa, a P2P service.Thomas-Rassett was ordered to pay $224,000 back in 2007 by a jury. Subsequently, the decision was subverted because the judges inappropriately directed the jury. A re-trial was then called for giving Thomas-Rasset a chance to have her sentence overturned.
According to some analysts, the case is still far from over.
"Given the size of the statutory damages award, Ms. Thomas-Rasset's legal team will likely be seriously considering a constitutional challenge to the verdict," Electronic Frontier Foundation senior attorney Fred von Lohmann said.
