US Set To Enhance National Cybersecurity

US Set To Enhance National Cybersecurity

US Set To Enhance National Cybersecurity

A new legislation was proposed at the US Congress, requesting for a mandatory computer security standards implemented on government and private business organizations. Senators John D. Rockefeller IV and Olympia J. Snowe were the brains behind the bill, aiming to build a National Cybersecurity Advisor (NCA), which gives direct access to the president.

The NCA would be authorized to close private firms offering services like telephony and environmental supplies.  The group would also be able to implement certain security standrds throughout national infrastructures as well as build regional centers to ensure cybersecurity.

Senator Snowe said, "America’s vulnerability to massive cyber crime, global cyber espionage, and cyber attacks has emerged as one of the most urgent national security problems facing our country today."

"Our failure to implement effective policies and procedures to protect critical infrastructure, prevent invasive intrusion and conduct an aggressive threat assessment has proven extremely consequential, putting the American information system at grave risk. It is abundantly clear we must unite on all fronts to confront this monumental challenge, if we fail to take swift action, we, regrettably, risk a cyber-Katrina."

The proposed legislation would further establish a Cybersecurity Advisory Panel,  advise the president on cybersecurity issues. The panel will be participated by major industry players, academia and security organizations.
