Tories Aim to Ditch Ofcom

Tories Aim to Ditch OfcomConservative party leader David Cameron declared plans to make major changes once the Tories win the next General Election. For one, telecoms watchdog Ofcom will be scrapped in a move to trim down public sector budget by cutting the number of non-government organizations tasked to monitor several aspects of public and business life.

Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the communication industries in the UK. A year after it was established, it was vested the powers previously held by the countries five regulatory bodies.

According to Cameron, Ofcom’s responsibilities will be handed bacck to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

“The problem today is that too many state actions, services and decisions are carried out by people who cannot be voted out by the public, by organisations that feel no pressure to answer for what happens in a way that is completely unaccountable," Cameron said.
