Social Networks Become a Trend at Work

Social networking sites were originally created for friends and families to communicate and build online communities. Now its use is being spread in the business industry where employees register for a user account for business related purposes.

A survey responded by 527 end users and IT managers found that about 60 percent of participants use social networking sites at work. Approximately 50 percent of those who participated in the survey acknowledged using the sites for office related tasks. Among the widely accessed social networking sites are LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Digg.

Business reasons cited were "professional networking with colleagues," "learning about colleagues," "research," "setting up a meeting," and "sales prospecting."

Though social networking bears security threats, users are still broadly practicing it both for personal and business intents. It is in fact being exploited by internet offenders to propagate malware or dupe users into accessing sites packed with malicious programs.
