One in Four Legal Firms Fess Up to Losing Classified Data on Mobiles
A survey has revealed that around 25 percent of law firms in the UK acknowledge the fact that they've been losing highly classified information on mobile devices. This is attributed to flaccid security measures taken over important company data leaving case-notes, contract details, as well as client information at risk. The survey was conducted by market research firm The Survey Shop on behalf of Credant Technologies, a UK security company. There were 100 legal firms who participated the survey, by which 90 percent of the lawyers who responded trust that their data are encrypted with a password.
In addition, the survey concluded that about 20 percent of lawyers use their own mobile device to store clients' data despite the fact that IT departments do not have the capability to secure the devices once lawyers leave the firm.
“Many personal mobile devices are being used by lawyers which clearly by-pass any security procedures set-up by the legal firm. This creates an uncontrollable environment for the IT security staff as they simply can’t keep track of which devices they’ve secured and which they haven’t,” said Michael Callahan, VP Global Marketing at Credant.
