New Internet Security Already Deemed Unsafe
Researchers were able to break the McEliece encryption system through a software that speeds up attack on the technology.Eindhoven University of Technology (EUT) Netherlands professor Tanja Lange and her PhD student Christiane Peters ran the software on various computers in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, France, Ireland, Taiwan and the US. A computer in Ireland spotted the cipher text.
The successful break in was announced at a conference in Cincinnati (US) on post-quantum cryptography. Its authors revealed that the McEliece cryptosystem have the ability to scramble to bigger sizes to skirt their attacks and continues to be a primary candidate for post-quantum cryptography.
Researchers are currently working on a much better encryption system to handle long-term confidentiality as even the latest version can be easily cracked.
