Music Pirate Faces Retrial
Music Pirate Faces Retrial
Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a Minnesota native accused of music piracy, will be facing a retrial on Monday. With the recent developments, Thomas’ camp is expected to argue some vital claims of music labels against her.Thomas-Rasset was ordered to pay a total of $222,000 in damage fees, for the songs she illicitly downloaded and shared through peer-to-peer network. There were six companies who pinned Thomas-Rasset on illegally distributing 1,702 copyrighted songs.
By some stroke of luck, the verdict was overturned by U.S District Judge Michael Davis, who ordered a retrial. Davis asserted that illegal distribution can only be possible if there is an actual spreading of music. According to the U.S Copyright Act and other associated bills, making music available for distribution on the web is not considered distribution.
