McAfee Pioneers 'Online 911' to Aid Cybercrime Victims

Security firm McAfee has set up a new website intended for victims of cyber offenses. McAffee’s Cybercrime Response Unit works like an online emergency hotline for those attacked by internet crooks.

The site provides victims with basic troubleshooting steps to computer issues brought by malicious attacks. McAfee’s move was influenced by the surge in cybercrimes in 2008. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center recorded a 33 percent increase in internet-related crimes last year.

Based on historical data, users who have been hacked are mostly unaware of their situation. To avoid such circumstances, McAfee provides a tool designed for visitors to run an online scanning program.  This will examine any marks of computer breach.

Pamela Warren, a cybercrime strategist with McAfee, said,  "If you're a victim and you just don’t know where to go, this is really meant to consolidate [that information]. Regardless of what the cybercrime is, you can come here and get help."
