Illegal Downloaders to Pay Annual Fines
Illegal Downloaders to Pay Annual Fines
According to BT, the proposed deferment of internet services for those who illicitly download copyrighted music or other entertainment materials will cost broadband consumers across the UK £25 annually.Software piracy costs the entertainment £1 million per day which prompted BT to initiate the proposal. BT’s consumer division chief John Peter said that internet service providers could not absorb such cost which is why it would need to be shouldered by consumers.
A representative from BT said a huge sum will be allocated for the integration of new technology into the network so ISPs can monitor downloaders. Other costs include notifying and informing consumers about the new regulation.
“We feel that instead music labels should develop new business models,” the spokesman stated.
“At the moment, they just want to outsource all their problems to ISPs. Legislation before the introduction of Digital Britain did allow music labels to go after people that downloaded copyrighted music, but they did not take advantage of it because it would have generated bad PR for themselves.”
