Home Office Plans to Speed Up ID Card Policy

The Home Office has expedited the roll out of ID cards for level 2 skilled migrants. The office is targeting those who need to be moved to UK from other countries.

By January of next year, all skilled migrants reapplying or renewing for UK visas will get their ID card. The Home Office also hastened the enrolment of skilled migrants and temporary employees under Tiers 1 and 5 of the points based immigration system.

The ID card scheme was introduced back in November 2008, and the Home Office aims for a complete roll out by 2010. The policy applies to all foreign nationals who want to work in Europe. To date, 90,000 cards have been issued, mostly to students renewing their visa under Tier 4 of the PBS as well as those who are renewing their marriage visas.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson further declared that the UK Border Agency will test a technology at 17 Crown Post Offices by which foreign nationals can register fingerprints to apply for cards.
