Government Enhances Online Shopping Security

The UK government is exhausting other means to provide e-buyers with a better and more secure shopping experience. Gareth Thomas, Consumer Affairs minister, said that the existing e-commerce structure is built to shield consumers on the high street.

Online shopping has considerably grown, thus the need for the government to amend its current system security. From an average of 32 percent, the number rose to 57 percent in 2008.

Thomas said in a statement, "Our current system is designed to protect the consumer who goes to a shopping centre or retail park. We need to create a regime that is fit to protect the consumer from modern fraudsters and criminals."

A representative from the British Retail Consortium stated, "The government aims to target rogue internet traders, and our members, who are reputable traders, are keen to see this sort of thing driven out. It damages the reputation of online retailing overall. We welcome this is principle, but we haven't at this stage got anything in detail, so it's hard to know whether the measures they're planning are going to work."
