FCC Chief Cautions Over Possible Spectrum Crisis

Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski has warned of a ‘”looming spectrum crisis” if the government continues to disregard creating a bandwidth for mobile devices.

Genachowski said the government may encounter problems with the growing wireless traffic caused by online video and other bandwidth-heavy applications. He then assured FCC would prioritize ways to close the gap between demand and supply.

"I believe that the biggest threat to the future of mobile in America is the looming spectrum crisis," Genachowski said.

Genachowski reiterated the need for added spectrum as wireless traffic grows. The FCC has generated billions of dollars from selling off airwaves to top wireless carriers in order to allow mobile broadband access and provide wireless applications. The agency has also freed some airwaves for unauthorized uses like Wi-Fi connections.

CTIA has urged FCC to immediately make more wireless spectrum available.
