Cybercrimes Proliferate as Tough Times Continue
Garlik, an online identity firm, reported that internet offenses committed in the UK have boosted compared to that of last year. The increase is attributed to the present worldwide economic condition.According to the report, online financial scams swelled to around 20%, that is 250,000 incidents in 2007. In general, the report concluded that over 3.5 million cybercrimes were executed last year, showing a 9 percent increase from last year's numbers.
The research revealed that personal data of internet users in the UK are illicitly being bartered online, igniting a black market of pilfered personal information. In addition, Garlik's report uncovered that more than two million users were victims of vicious e-mails, bogus or provocative accusations posted on websites, or blackmail carried out over the internet.
