Cyber Criminals Breach University Health Records
Hackers broke into the health records of the University of California at Berkeley. The criminals managed to breach the school's computer databases in its health-services center.Data related to health-insurance coverage and some medical information were most likely pilfered. University Health Services (UHS) medical-record number, dates of visits or names of healthcare providers, and personal information such as Social Security Number were also feared to be taken by the internet crooks.
The school has already notified current and former Berkely students who may have been impacted by the breach. About 160,000 individuals are estimated to have been affected by the attack.
Berkeley officials think the server breach may have started October 9 last year, running until April 2009. Administrators found about it upon doing system maintenance. The hackers left messages which led to discovery of the breach. They are believed to be working overseas, accessing a public website and bypassing database encryption kept in the same server.
