Cisco Code Thief Indicted

Philip Gabriel Pettersson, a Sweden native, was indicted on one count of intrusion and two counts of misappropriation of trade secrets in 2004 Cisco code theft.

The indictment came following an FBI investigation on the theft of source code for Cisco System's IOS or Internetwork Operating System software. IOS is used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and current Cisco network switches. It is a package of routing, witching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a multitasking operating system.

Pettersson, also known as "Stakkato", was responsible for a number of attacks which took place at the same time Cisco was breached. The Department of Justice said Pettersson intruded Cisco's network between May 12 and May 13, 2004. During this period, he is alleged to have misappropriated IOS code, although customer data as well as partner and financial information were not compromised.

Pettersson is facing a maximum of 10 years in jail plus three years of supervised released. He will also be paying  US$250,000 fine once convicted.
