Businesses Remain Sloppy on Storage Security
Despite the proliferation of data breaches, business organizations are still lenient when it comes to storage security. Most of the these firms do not encrypt their backup data allowing more possibilities of information theft, according to a research conducted by security vendor Thales Group and Trust Catalyst. The results of the study showed that backup tapes are often disregarded by administrators. Around 35 percent of those who responded the survey admitted they don't focus much on data security.
Kevin Bocek, director of product marketing at Thales, said, "Traditionally, storage has been a domain in and of itself, and IT security has been focusing on front-facing business applications, so they don't pay that much attention to security."
Bocek also added that storage divisions are mostly concerned with the cost and performance of data recovery rather that encryption. Furthermore, businesses feel they do not have sufficient technology for enterprise-grade tape encryption which explains why most of them seem to be too slipshod in terms of storage protection.
