BBC Uses Botnet in Tech Show Feature

BBC has acquired a hacking tool for its tech show Click, highlighting the dangers of botnets when exploited by criminals. The botnet was bought from an online chatroom and was used to attack approximately 22,000 computers.

BBC said in a statement, “If this exercise had been done with criminal intent it would be breaking the law. But our purpose was to demonstrate botnet's collective power when in the hands of criminals.”

BBC sent out a spam to two categorical email addressses which were created by the broadcasting newtwork's show. The spam messages were fanned out to thousands of inboxes in just a matter of hours. It then launched a  Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on a particular backup site.

Click directed its simulated PCs to strafe its target site with Only 60 minutes have passed beore the site's bandwidth was overloaded. BBC already despoiled the botnet and adviced users who owned the experimented PCs to stretch its computer security.
