Attempt to Gag MIT Hackers Bounces Back

A federal court ordered three MIT students who were accused of hacking the Boston Highway Fare collection system to stay mum about how they did it. However, this decision just backfired as the 87-slide presentation that they were not allowed to talk about can now be studied by other hackers online. The restriction aimed to obstruct the three students in discussing how they figured out a way to skirt the commuter system’s security. The three were able to change a $1.25 fare card to a $100 fare card.
Zack Anderson, R.J Ryan, and Alessandro Chiesa were set to present, “Anatomy of a Subway Hack”, at the hugely popular Defcon but somehow, it was blocked by an injunction acquired by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The injunction went through but the presentation has been dispensed at the conference and was entered into public record when the MBTA decided to file a complaint against the three students.
