US Named Top Source of Spam Messages

The US remains on top of the list of countries relaying spam messages across the globe. Around 15.6 pecent of all junk email have originated from the country.

Sophos released this year's Dirty Dozen list, where Russia and Brazil trailed behind the US. The firm also noted that malware attacks were mostly caused by the increasing popularity of social networking sites. Another contributing factor were URL shortening services, which were employed to dupe users into accessing malicious websites.

Graham Cluley at Sophos said, "Clearly the problem isn't going away, as is illustrated by the large number of sprawling spam campaigns we see on a daily basis."

"Although it may seem encouraging to see reductions in the volume of spam that certain countries are contributing, the authorities, internet service providers and home users across the world need to be doing more to crack down on the spam problem."

Sophos further revealed that Asia is the worst continent when it comes to the proliferation of spam messages. Around 66 percent of the entire spam volume stemmed from the area, while Europe ranked second at a little above 21 percent.
