Spyware Attacks Proliferate, Security Firm Says

Security company Panda Labs reported a 10 percent increase in spyware level was seen over the first quarter of 2009. The number was quite low during the same period of last year, accounting to a mere 2,5 percent. The firm further revealed that the Virtumonde spyware was the most frequent attacker, causing popups and ads for roque antispyware programs. It intermittently degrades performance and launches denial of service attacks to several websites.

Despite the rise in spyware levels, Panda specified that spyware comprise a very small fraction of the entire malware infections. Trojans and adware are on the lead, which comprise more than 50 percent of all malware attacks.

Generally, the security firm identified an uphill trend in malware attacks wherein threats being launched carry out their targeted actions. Panda Labs said highest active attack rate since August last year accounted to14.33 per cent.
