Rootkit Caused Blue Screens of Death
On Wednesday, IT company Microsoft finally found out what caused the Blue Screens problem: a rootkit. The problem with its IT product - Windows XP, started to bug IT services users after they installed an IT security patch that the software company released to address a 17 year old flaw. So, the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors affected only users that had their PCs infected with the Alureon rootkit.Mike Reavey, the director of the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), said on the Internet in a blog post that "Our investigation has concluded that the reboot occurs because the system is infected with malware. Also, malware writers modified Windows behavior by attempting to access a specific memory location, instead of letting the operating system determine the address." Even though Windows XP is one of the most used operating systems, Microsoft hasn't issued any instructions or tools to solve the BSOD.
