PC Infections Rise As Botnet Operators Rebuild Their Networks
According to security firm McAfee, computers infected with viruses and malware variants have significantly increased as botnet operators aim to reconstruct their networks. The growth has been seen since McColo was closed down.Around 12,000 new IP addresses from 'zombie' PCs have been recorded in the first quarter of this year, Mc Affee claimed.
McAfee Avert Labs head Jeff Green said, "This is the reseeding of botnets. We are expecting an uptake in the amount of spam later this year as a result."
Malware variants have also proliferated in 2008, accounting a 270 percent increase. This year, the rate has risen by 115 percent.
