Legit Sites Targeted by Hackers to Host Malware

MessageLabs reported that the number of legitimate websites employed by hackers to host malware has spiraled uncontrollably.

Based on the research conducted within 4 days, from May 4 to May 8, hackers have used popular sites which have been built around a year or more. The results shows that malicious websites do not exist in a short span of time, contrary to popular belief.

MessageLabs said hackers are now using a different approach, attacking other domain levels.

"The bad guys will compromise the DNS and add sub-domains, MessageLabs' Paul Wood explained.

"People need to be extra vigilant and understand that even sites they know and trust can be compromised through attacks such as SQL injection attacks, while businesses need to ensure they take the necessary precautions to block all the latest malicious sites," Wood added.

"With the ever advancing world of cybercrime, nothing can be taken at face value."

Wood sees hosted services as the only key to combat such attacks.

"There are things you can do in the cloud that you simply can't do on your own computer," Woods asserted.
