At the ITU Telecom World 2009, the UN expressed its fears of a world war that would be fought on the web. ITU chief Hamadoun Touré said nations have become increasingly reliant on the internet and that the next war would be centered on the online arena.
"The next world war could happen in cyber space and that would be a catastrophe. We have to make sure that all countries understand that, in that war, there is no such thing as a superpower," Touré noted.
"Loss of vital networks would quickly cripple any nation, and none is immune to cyber attack."
Governments have been alarmed by the possibility of online attack, urging them to strengthen their online defences. NATO has already done its part to thwart potential online warfare. The US Department of Homeland Security also assured it will be hiring around 1,000 new IT support experts.
The delegates of the conference were further advised to enhance software security to protect their computer systems.
