UN Chief Calls for IT Support Firms to Promote Green Technology
United Nations general secretary encourages companies offering IT support to focus on green technology.Ban Ki-moon stated in his speech that IT companies are accountable for two to three percent of greenhouse emissions across the globe.
"But they can also reduce emissions in other sectors by at least 15 per cent," Ki-moon said.
"This means they can be significant in our fight against climate change."
Ki-moon further noted that IT retailers should think of better ways to aid concerned groups in battling climate threats.
"The weather stations will monitor the impact of climate change. When there is news, we will be able to transmit it immediately to farmers' mobile phones. We hope to reach as many African farmers as possible, because seven out of 10 Africans rely on farming to survive," Ki-moon added.
In this year's Newsweek top 500 green businesses, HP topped the list. Ki-moon said it would have been better if the top four spots were held by IT companies.
