Nationwide To Trim Down Server Count

Nationwide Mutual Insurance is looking to cut the number of x86 servers by half to save hardware costs. The company has currently  5,000 machines and it aims to reduce it to 2,500 employing VMware's virtualisation software.  Its ratio of virtual systems per physical server has an average of 13:1 and various boxes host a maximum of 20 virtual machines.

Nationwide's move aims to shelve datacenter expansion for as long as three years, on top of saving hardware expenditures, through adopting virtualization. According to Scott Miggo, vice president of infrastructure engineering at Nationwide Services, prior to shifting an application or service operating on a physical server to a virtual system, Nationwide's IT support staff needs to promote the initiative to its customers, Miggo also expressed interest in establishing a proof-of-concept project in a cloud environment, and probably embark on cloud-based systems for testing and development work.
