Judge Denies Bail Reduction for IT Head
An IT support administrator who was jailed for declining to surrender administrative passwords to San Francisco's city network was denied a lower bail by Superior Court Judge Kevin McCarthy. Terry Childs was charged with holding the city's FiberWAN network hostage and installing unwarranted "back-door" modems on the city's network.Childs was arrested on July 12, 2008. On Monday, the court decided to keep his bond at the same rate, beclouding his chance to get out of jail. Childs is currently charged with one count of breaching computer services. If convicted, he will be spending a maximum of five years in jail.
The court set a $5 million bail for Childs; however, the San Francisco Felony Bail Schedule believes the bail is too high. Grave crimes average at $1 million in bail. Prosecutors insist the court's decision was just appropriate, arguing that if the accused is released, he could cause severe damage to San Francisco's network.
