IT Education Progresses, Number of Students Decline
Based on reports made by schools’ inspector Ofsted, students taking IT subjects have remarkably declined contrary to the enhancements made in IT studies. From 2004 to 2007, the number of students in A-level ICT courses has trimmed down by 25 percent. On the other hand, computer studies A-level dropped by 32 percent. The decrease in the number of girls studying computer-related courses was worst, falling by 45 percent. Ofted said, “Fewer girls than ever are studying for formal qualifications in the subject in the sixth form and the number continues to decline. Less than one quarter of IT graduates are women. This has serious implications for the IT industry, where just one in five workers is female."
The decline comes despite the significant progress IT education is making. Schools have spent millions just to improve the quality of IT teachings and a growing commitment of school leaders is seen across the UK. However, Ofsted specified that teachers still lack important areas in IT field.
