Skill secretary John Denham has proposed that IT companies winning government contracts must train their employees. This is to ensure that the money being allocated to acquire IT Support are spent appropriately.
Various IT leaders across government departments have agreed to ensure that winning IT bidders can present a concrete development plan for their staff.
"The IT industry is one of the industries which is critical to the future of the British economy and its ability to survive and thrive post-recession. It’s vitally important that British business has IT skills to draw on at all level," Denham said.
Denham wanted to make sure that individual skills of IT professionals are not put to waste and skills shortages are being prevented.
The UK has been experiencing skills shortages over the past few years. According to the Sector Skills Council for IT, about 131,000 are needed each year until 2019.
Denham has coordinated with UK chief information officer John Suffolk and leading IT industry representatives to discuss ways to invest in IT skills.
