Federal Health IT Coding Attracts Developers
The launching of "Code-A-Thon", an open source event sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services drew a huge audience on Thursday. It was originally for 50 developers but more around 130 people registered within the first three days. The event was for the department's Connect health information gateway, which was held at the D.C. Connect is a software that allows industry and federal agencies integrate their IT support systems to the Nationwide Health Information Network. Obama is currently focusing on some IT initiatives to improve the country's cyber infrastructure.
"The goal was for the people in the room to leave, seeing themselves as the community, and to be able to identify areas where they could be active or start a path toward that, Apache Software Foundation co-founder and Mozilla board member Brian Behlendorf said.
"It is to turn this into a community-driven effort where the development work is decentralized among a large community of stakeholders," he added.
Connect is designed to promote government initiatives centering on IT systems. The event was aimed at creating a community and do some work on bug fixes, development tools, and a subscription management client.
