European Commission Plans to Adjust Copyright Laws
The European Commission has announced plans to make some changes in copyright laws to make way for the digitisation of Europe’s books. The Commission conducted workshops and meetings last Monday to make the changes possible while ensuring fair compensation for authors and have the books easily available online. Cultural institutions, right holders, IT support companies, and consumer groups attended the meetings. The meetings further extracted means to eliminate the disintegration of European copyright legislation throughout national borders.
"It is time for Europe to turn over a new e-leaf on digital books and copyright,” information society and media commissioner Viviane Reding and internal market and services commissioner Charlie McCreevy said.
Reding further expressed that Europe needs to transform its legislation on digital books copyright. The US has already tackled the challenges in book digitization, and the European Commission aims to follow suit.
