Video sharing web site YouTube is about to take out its users’ option to download videos for offline viewing. YouTube declared that users who upload their videos can only offer paid downloads.
The paid download feature is currently under testing phase with chosen partners. Google also decided to deliberately disable external offerings that allow users to save a copy of a certain video on their PCs.
Under YouTube’s terms of service, external video ripping is highly prohibited. Section 5 states, "You may access User Submissions for your information and personal use solely as intended through the provided functionality of the YouTube Website. You shall not copy or download any User Submission unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the YouTube Website for that User Submission."
YouTube’s move has not come unexpectedly. With the current economic crunch, the site is looking for novel ways to generate money and keep its business afloat during harsh times.
