Google is underwriting a conference in Silicon Valley on October 10, also known as  BarCamp Africa, which centers on Africa's IT advancement. The event is anticipated to deliberate on way to aid Africa and how to provide Americans greater awareness on the continent.

BarCamp Africa will be publicly aired involving virtual participation through tweeting, blogging, streaming, photos posted on Flickr, video and audio recording, as well as a conference wiki. A question-and-answer portion will also be part of the program to allow African attendees to speak their mind and ask significant questions from Silicon Valley.

There has been a debate whether the event should be held in the U.S or Africa and if African IT specialists should also take part. Erik Hersman, a facilitator in Barcamp Africa who was involved in June's Barcamp Nairobi, said, "I have talked to the organizing team to create some way for people from around the African continent to take part. "It would require a certain amount of bandwidth, of course."
